An international corpus for the study of SMS language

In recent years, SMS communication has become a social phenomenon. Many scientific studies ( in linguistics, sociology, anthropology, psychology, communication etc.) have looked into this new form of communication, but their conclusions remain partial and incomplete. Indeed, researchers lack access to the extensive databases that would allow them to study corpora based on genuine material. The aim of the sms4science project is to contribute to the study of SMS communication and of its language. In order to reach this target, researchers from various countries are joining forces to undertake the composition, for a large number of languages, of a vast SMS corpus for scientific research.

The universities of La Réunion, Birmingham, Barcelone, Thessalonique and 4 universities in France are partners in this project and are carrying out the composition of corpora for their countries.
